Regulatory Complexity and the Constantly Shifting Expectations: Cannabis compliance is complex and in the absence of federal regulation, the cannabis industry as we know it today operates as an impossible patchwork of regulatory changes. Our industry has undergone seismic shifts as new states legalize cannabis and attempt to rapidly address the unintended consequences of rules and regulations. 

The Daunting Task of Interpreting Law, Rules, and Regulations When They Fall Short: Owners, compliance officers, and consultants must be translators capable of navigating the gray area when the language of the laws, rules, and regulations fail to anticipate issues that inevitably arise.  Correctly interpreting a simple “if”, “and”, or “or”, statement within the rules and regulations can mean passing an on-site inspection with flying colors or dealing with violations, fines, or license revocation. It can mean advising a client in a way that builds trust and authority or setting that client up for failure.

Taking on Too Many Roles and the Conflicts of Interest That Can Create: When your operational and compliance roles are shared by one department or even one employee, you create an environment where your compliance team doesn’t have the perspective and distance to review, validate, and improve operational workflows in collaboration with your operations team. 

Lacking Oversight and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to Measure Success: Accountability is key. When your operation lacks SOPs, auditing workflows, oversight, and accountability, you’re setting your team up for confusion in the present and mayhem as errors compound over time. Imagine your compliance officer and operations manager have all of the SOPs they need and a thorough knowledge of your operations workflows but they do not have the KPIs they need to measure success. All of that hard work invested in building compliant workflows and related documentation is wasted unless your managers can assess their teams performance and address issues in real-time using the right KPIs. The whole company is exposed to unnecessary risk.

Failing to Implement an Effective Training Framework: Take a hard look at your company's training program. Regardless of whether you deliver the training yourself or work with partners like RMCC, without an effective training plan, you risk high employee turnover, employees executing outdated workflows leading to regulatory violations, and ultimately, a lack of accountability. Often, the task of developing internal training falls on the shoulders of compliance and operational managers who are already drowning under the weight of their immense responsibilities.
